IRONMAN Kalmar
Kalmar and Öland, Småland (start at Tullhamnen, finish at Stortorget)
IRONMAN Kalmar is the full triathlon distance in south-east Sweden: 3.8 km in the Baltic Sea, 180 km across the Öland Bridge and the island, then a marathon through Kalmar's streets to the square. The course is flat and the weather is mild, so the difficulty is the length, not the terrain. The next race, on 21 August 2027, is already sold out.

How tough is it?
Four meters, each 1 to 5, rated by our published method. The basis under each one shows the figures behind the score. How we rate.
Median finishing time 11 h 59 min of the 2,450 finishers on the official IRONMAN Kalmar 2026 results (ironman.com results data, 2026-10). Pros finished in 7 h 22 min (men) and 8 h 13 min (women); the last finisher came in at about 16 h. As of 2026-08.
Flat course: the bike has about 750 m of climb over 180 km and the run about 90 m (athlete guide, 2026), on roads and the Öland Bridge. The swim is open water in the Baltic with a ramp entry and exit. By the method's open-water rule it could be 4; flat roads put it nearer 2. Borderline 2 to 4. As of 2026-07.
Mid-August: ironman.com gives an average high of 20 degrees C, a low of 9 and water around 20. The athlete guide expects 18 to 21 degrees in the water; a wetsuit is optional up to 24.5 degrees and mandatory below 16, announced on race morning. As of 2026-07.
Generous cut-offs (swim 2 h 20 min, bike 10 h, finish 16 h) and about 6.7 per cent DNF (175 of about 2,625 starters, 2026). But 2027 sold out well before the date, and every class needs a triathlon licence (a one-day licence costs 500 kr). Borderline 3 to 4. As of 2026-10.
The course
The swim starts at Tullhamnen in a rolling start: you set off in a continuous line, in zones set by your predicted swim time, and the field takes about 20 minutes to cross the line. You swim 3.86 km in the Kalmar Strait of the Baltic and leave by ramp. You have 2 h 20 min from your own start.
The bike is one 180 km loop from Kvarnholmen. It crosses the 6 km Öland Bridge, goes round the island in farmland that is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and returns across the bridge to the mainland loop north of Kalmar. The climb is about 750 m, so it is fast and exposed; you must pass Färjestaden (110 km) by 14:30, and start the bike by 09:50.
The run is 42.2 km in just over three laps through Kalmar's centre and along the shore, finishing at Stortorget; a lap band tells officials which lap you are on, and there are six aid stations on each lap, never more than 2.5 km apart. Athletes finishing after the 16 h cut-off are Not Classified and cannot take age-group awards or a World Championship slot.
How to enter
Entry is through ironman.com. General entry for 2027 is sold out and the page offers a Notify me sign-up for the next opening; the race also carries World Championship qualification and the Flex90 early-entry benefit. IRONMAN also sells packages with NIRVANA (3,500 and 7,000 kr as listed in October 2026).
Every athlete needs a valid national triathlon licence. If you do not have one you can buy a one-day licence for 500 kr at registration or online; foreign athletes have to pick a Swedish club first. Bib numbers are not pre-allocated and are given out first come, first served at the registration desk.
How to train for it
Train the long bike on flat roads in wind
The bike is a single 180 km loop with few hills, so the work is staying aero and steady. Do long rides in headwind and on exposed roads, and practise eating every 20 km to match the aid stations.
Swim in open water in a wetsuit
The swim is a mass rolling start in the Baltic. Practise sighting, swimming near others and exiting a ramp in a wetsuit before race week.
Run 30 km off the bike
The marathon is three laps through the centre, and the median finisher is out for about 12 h. Do bike-to-run sessions and a long run on tired legs rather than only fresh runs.
Rehearse your pacing against the cut-offs
Know your swim and bike splits against 2 h 20 min and the 14:30 mark at 110 km, so you reach the run with time in hand.
What you need
- A wetsuit that is no thicker than 5 mm and has no forearm reinforcement; it is optional up to 24.5 degrees and compulsory under 16.
- Bike with solid racing tyres: the guide warns of stones on some roads.
- No bib number in the swim; fins, gloves, paddles and pull buoys are banned.
- Your race kit in the blue (swim to bike) and red (bike to run) bags, and the chip handed out at bike check-in.
- Litter goes in the bins at aid stations; a littering penalty applies.
Getting there and staying
Kalmar is in south-east Sweden; the organiser lists accommodation and travel on ironman.com. Registration and bike check-in are on Kvarnholmen in the two days before the race, and race briefings (Swedish at 16:00, English at 18:00) are in Kalmarsalen in race week.
Race day starts at 06:45 for the pros and 07:00 to 07:20 for age-groupers; transition opens at 05:00. The Heroes Hour finish party is at Stortorget in the evening, and the awards and Kona slot allocation take place the next day.
History
IRONMAN Kalmar uses the Öland Bridge as its signature bike section, and the organiser also describes a Viking of the North award for finishing a 70.3 and a full IRONMAN in the Nordics in the same year (ironman.com, 2026).
